Longer distance commuting by bicycle is perceived impossible by many. Not so for the Dutch. A combination of public transport and a bicycle is easy and very common in the Netherlands. There is also a Summer version: www.youtube.com That there are more bicycles than people in the Netherlands is in part due to commuters who have bicycles in more than one city: the city they live in and the city they work in. The distance between the two cities is bridged by public transport, mostly train. The distance covered in this video ('s-Hertogenbosch to Utrecht) is about 50 kilometers (31 miles) one way. It takes less than an hour and that is about twice as fast than it would take by car for this particular route. The video shows how it is done on a winters day. Morning rush hour takes place in the dark during the winter months in the Netherlands.

@bosiefoobar A folding bike can be handy, but is more suitable for the occasional trips you take where you have to cycle: In this case, the guy that made the vid is commuting between these two places: then you’ll get fed up with wandering around with your folding bike very fast ;)

@luiseduardo586 Bikes should be equipped with a working frontlight and a working tail light: none of them is allowed to flash in either way whatsoever.

No this is earlier on the same line: from ‘s-Hertogenbosch to Utrecht.
Cold comes and goes, but will be there in January! We could still have snow in April… or 15C… that depends.

Are there any regulations for the bikes? I mean, at 4:00 the bikes look like they have tail lights, should they have an electric generator?…. very enjoyable and cool video.

Just wondering, why not get a folding bike? guess you guys don’t have as much as snow as we do in austria, so you should have a neat ride all year long

That depends which type of parking you use. There is free parking on the street, there is guarded free outside parking run by the city. This particular indoor parking facility is run by the Dutch railways and they charge about 90 euros for one year’s parking. There are other indoor underground parking facilities further away that take about 60 to 100 euros per year. Around this railway station there are tens of thousands of parking spaces, yet there are still not enough! See the other movie.

Is the parking at the railway station free?

This was really helpful. I’m working on my major project for masters in architecture and I’m designing bicycle facilities in melbourne. There is nothing like this in melbourne!

Thanks for taking the time to do this.
