BBC Langham Studio version of White Queen (As It Began) recorded on April 3rd 1974 at Langham 1 Studios in London and broadcast on Radio 1 on April 15th 1974. Lyrics: So sad her eyes Smiling dark eyes So sad her eyes As it began On such a breathless night as this Upon my brow the lightest kiss I walked alone And all around the air did say My lady soon will stir this way In sorrow known The white queen walks and the night grows pale Stars of lovingness in her hair Needing - unheard Pleading - one word So sad her eyes She cannot see How did thee fare, what have thee seen The mother of the willow green I call her name 'Neath the window have I stayed I loved the foot steps that she made And when she came White queen how my heart did ache And dry my lips no words could make Still I wait My Goddess hear my darkest fear I speak too late It's for evermore that I wait Dear friend, goodbye No tears in my eyes So sad it ends As it began ----------------------------- "Freddie Mercury" "Roger Taylor" "Brian May" "John Deacon" "Bohemian Rhapsody" "Don't Stop Me Now" "I Want It All" "Somebody To Love" "These Are The Days Of Our Lives" "We Will Rock You" "We Are The Champions" "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" "Fat Bottomed Girls" "Bicycle Race" "Play The Game" "A Kind Of Magic" "Innuendo" "Another One Bites The Dust" "Killer Queen" "You're My Best Friend" "Breakthru" "Body Language" "Under Pressure" "Wembley" "I'm Going Slightly Mad" "Breakthru" "Barcelona" "Scandal" "The Miracle" "Radio ...

I like this version for the most part. I thought that Freddie’s singing could have used a little more polishing up at times. I think he did a better job on the Queen II version for a large portion of the song, but from the “My Goddess…” line, he definitely rocks hard. I do like the extended instrumental portion of this version of the song with the piano. Got a sort of Led Zeppelin feel going on. Awesome song.

    @ rocketshipstud:

Was “White queen” really written about Galadriel? I mean, was that Queen’s intention?

This is a cracking version. Especially the middle eight guitar part played with the piano. I have never heard this before. Was it ever released on vinyl…???

The instrumental on this version sounds more like the way they played it live.
    Either way, brilliant!

@thenhbushman. No Queen are better than any modern recordings.

I seem to be alone on this but the live at hammersmith odeon version to me is the best version of this song.

the drums are the real surprise on this version. they are absolutely brilliant and better than many modern recordings.

I love the rawness and passion in this version, as well as the extra piano bits. Wouldn’t go as far as to say I prefer it to the final album cut (when the chorus swells in the original, I get goosebumps everytime), but it’s still fascinating.

i love this so much. the compliments for this band are never ending, from a never ending amount of people but this song is on an album which i consider perfect.

it captures every little thing id want in a band and i like that there are different versions of these songs to listen to.
(like playing spot the difference) XD

it influences me so much but i can only wish that i could ever come up with anything as amazing as Queen II is.

It never ceases to amaze me how brian always had in mind “the big picture” regarding his guitar parts. The way he lays counter melodies on the solo blows my mind…Thanks for uploading this.

I prefer this version to the studio version. I like the ‘live’ sound of this and the extra piano bits from freddie really sound great here. The original version is a bit too slick in my opinion as is most of Queen II. Thanks for uploading.

Blessed to have seen them in los angeles in 1978, 1980 and 1981…no tours after that….i was 12 years old and it was my first concert…

….that doesnt make it a fact, it makes it an opinion. there is a difference. i love both, but this one is better to me than the original. you can think the original is better if youd like.

    Erhm…
Excuse me but the fact is that the original one is better.
However due to the fact that you have listened to the other recording a million times you probably got “bored” of it or something like this…
It happens to me again and again!

You’re absolutely right, that version at the Rainbow is stunning…the dual lead interplay between Brian/Freddie is brilliant. Especially within the context of a heavy rock song. Queen II was always my fave album…mainly for all the Sheer rocking on it, not to mention the darkness and melancholy. When I got (what was then a bootleg…is it available now?) the Rainbow show about 20 years ago…it took my breath away.
