The summer is the perfect occasion for togetherness while the kids are home for a few months. It can get expensive taking them to theme parks, water parks, and fun centers, especially if you're on a tight budget. If you are in the same situation as many Americans are, you shouldn't worry, because there are scores of free activities you can do at home. These ideas are great for the little ones, ages 10 and under. Most of these suggestions are concentrated on learning activities together.

How Regular Household Items Can Be Used in Your Games

Everyday things from your home can be the props in the mock scenes you create. An amusing game to play at home is to imagine that you run an emergency room or doctor's office. Have the kids gather a stuffed toy or other toy and then use things from around your home that can serve as make-believe doctor's tools. Most houses are jam-packed with odd trinkets that can be made into surgical kits. You can also do another variation of this game by pretending to run a television studio where the news is being reported. A Teddy bear or other toys can be used as part of the make-believe scenes that your child and you are reporting to the pretend audience.

Go on a Make-Believe Safari

A game that is particularly entertaining is to create the illusion of being out in the wild, such as on a safari journey. Take out extra large sheets and tie the ends into chairs, the sofa, or to anything in the room that will hold steadily. Wrap the sheets so that thechildren feel like they are hidden by large forest trees or in the thick brush where the wild creatures can't see them. If you have a pair of binoculars, give them to the kids to make it feel more real. Have your kids gather all of the stuffed creatures and animal figures they can find and set them up throughout the room, mostly hiding from view, and then use the binoculars to peek on them. Ask the children to call the names of the animals as they find them and then make the sound of that animal. They always have a blast with this game!

Bring the Fun Outdoors

An inexpensive, yet really active thing to do is to go out as a family for a ride on bicycles. If you have younger children, you can bring them with you in a trailer attachment where they can be seated in a secured cart. For smaller trips, some kids might want to use their skateboard to get through the ride. To make it even more interesting, take your time and give the kids things to find along the way, like a treasure hunt. Things like birds, flowers, or squirrels can all be great things for everyone to call out as they spot them. This game also works beautifully on a nature walk and can teach children about nature and their environment.

Fun in the Evenings

As the sun sets, the fun doesn't have to end! Set up a tent in the back of your house along with binoculars for star gazing. If you have a firebowl or a small charcoal barbeque, you can make a wood fire for them. Have the kids find some long sticks for browning s'mores. If you have a few days open this summer, go camping at a local lake or beach and extend your time enjoying nature! These suggestions will surely give you and your children some quality time together to learn, grow, and laugh.

What is the best way to keep my bike from being stolen?

The best way to protect your bicycle is: "Have more security on your bike than the bike it's parked next to."

Looking at many different locks that are available, most do the basic securing of a bike. A lock can be as costly as you choose to make it, from a few dollars for a basic lock which does nothing to prevent theft, to over a hundred dollars for a really good lock.

The most popular product used to protect homes, cars and motor bikes is: An Alarm! Most cars have them why not my bike?

While looking for a good lock I decided to look at alarms also. A separate bike alarm will cost from $25.00 to well over a hundred dollars. An alarm is a great idea because this is something that makes a lot of noise and attracts a bunch of attention. The noise is an excellent deterrent, thieves do not want attention, just to grab the item and run.

I had purchased a lock and also a separate alarm to try and remedy the situation to help me keep my bike from being stolen. I now have two items to help secure my bike, the lock and the alarm.

So, what if the two were combined? A lock and an alarm together in one package would make a much better system! I did even better I found the alarm and lock with a flexible cable. I can attach my bike to almost anything I can put the cable around. My bike is now securely locked and if somebody moves it the alarm shrieks at 110 decibels and this creates even more attention to my bike. A bike that will not move because of the lock and the alarm is making so much noise it becomes more hassle to steal it than it is worth.

An efficient package and so noisy when activated! The cable is approximately 2 ½ feet long and over ¾ inches thick, very flexible and weighs just over 2 pounds, easy to take with me on trips.

I feel better knowing I have done almost all I can do to protect my investment from being stolen while using just one product to do all I require. This versatile cable alarm lock can be used as a lock or an alarm-lock.

This cable alarm lock also serves to secure my ATV and lawn/garden shed which holds other valuable items I own. I am finding many different uses for this alarm-lock, I not only lock my bike with it I also lock my car steering wheel and you do not want to be in enclosed spaces when the 110 decibel alarm goes off.

While many people think it is foolish to lock their bike up, many others are facing the reality of having their bike stolen. Opportunistic theft is the most common method of stealing your bike, you spent hard earned money on your bike, spending a few dollars to help you keep it would be worthwhile in my opinion.

Cycling through Venice Beach, 03/09/10. Original song was "Down By The Seaside," but Led Zeppelin (or whoever owns them) wouldn't allow it.
